2024 Troop & Pack 104 / Packanack Lake Pinewood Derby

March 2nd 2024

Troop & Pack 104 are proud to host a Pinewood Derby Race open to entry by lake members.  Maybe you were a Cub Scout who wants to compete in the races again or maybe a dad (or mom) who built cars with your kids and never got to build a car of your own.  Maybe you are a youth who is not a scout but always wanted to build a car and race it.  Now is your chance.

 Three race categories

·       Youth (under 18) official rules

·       Adult (over 18) official rules

·       Outlaw class (adults and youth) with less restrictive rules

Cost is per entry $22 which includes a car kit. 

How it works

1.     Register here (Registration deadline is January 15th 2024. Limited to first 50 entries. No exceptions.)

2.     Pay the via Vemo (@Packanack-Troop) or check to made out to Troop 104. Drop check off at 96 Lenox Rd.

3.     We will contact you on how to get your kit.  Kits will be delivered after January 15th.

4.     Build your car (follow the appropriate rules below)

5.     Mandatory car drop-off and inspections Friday, March 1st 6 to 8pm at the clubhouse

6.     Race day - Saturday, March 2nd 11:30 AM at the clubhouse

7.     Awards for fastest car in each category

 

Official Race Rules

Each car must pass inspection by the Pinewood Derby committee before it may race. The Pinewood Derby committee has the right to disqualify those cars, which do not meet these specifications. On race day, any needed repairs must be done in the pit area under supervision of the Pinewood Derby committee.

 

Dimensions

·       Maximum weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The readings of the official race scale will be considered final.

·       Maximum overall width shall not exceed 2-3/4”.

·       Minimum width between the wheels shall be 1-3/4” to clear the track center rail.

·       Minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the track shall be 3/8” to clear the center guide strip.

·       Maximum length (including wheels) shall not exceed 7-1/8”.

·       Maximum height shall not exceed 2-3/4” in order to clear the timer tunnel.

·       The wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles) shall be the same as the default body kit distance of 4-3/8”.

·       Axles are to be positioned 1” from one end, and 1-5/8” from the other end, the same as the default body kit.

 

Wheels and Axles

·       Only the wheels and axles from the official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit may be used. Wheels and axles not from the official kits are prohibited with the exception of official BSA colored wheels available at authorized BSA retailers.

·       Axles may be lightly filed, sanded and polished. This light filing, sanding and polishing is the only axle modification allowed.

·       Wheels may be lightly sanded and polished. This light sanding and polishing is the only wheel modification allowed.

·       Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are prohibited.

·       No inner wheel weights, air dams, or any other inner wheel accessories are allowed. No wheelcovers, cosmetic, translucent or other, are allowed

·       The car shall not ride on any type of springs. The car must be free-wheeling with no starting device or other propulsion, such as adhesives, magnets, rubber bands, motors, jets, etc.

 

Lubrication

·       Only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite or white powder Pinewood Derby Car Lubricant, may be used. No wet lubricants such as oils, silicone sprays, etc are allowed.

·       A car may be lubricated with graphite before inspection. Once checked in, no further modifications or lubrication will be allowed.

 

Basics

·       If a car jumps off the track due to a mis-mount or for any reason, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second time for the same heat and determined car engineering was the cause, it will be given a Did Not Finish time.

·       If a car leaves its lane & interferes with another car, the heat will be run again. If the same car leaves its lane a second time and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again without the interfering car.

·       If a car suffers a mechanical problem and a repair can be accomplished within 5 minutes, the heat will be run again. Cars can be repaired only under the supervision of the Official Inspection Team.

·       Maximum height shall not exceed 2-3/4” in order to clear the timer tunnel.

·       No liquids, pressure vessels (e.g. CO2 cartridge) or incendiaries (fireworks or rocket engines). Other means of propulsion are allowed.

·       Standard, aftermarket, modified, unmodified. Go crazy.
